چکیده

Abstract The distribution of groundwater age is useful for evaluating the susceptibility and sustainability resources. Here, we compute aquifer-scale cumulative function to characterize 21 Principal Aquifers that account ~80% public-supply pumping in United States. each Aquifer was derived from an ensemble modeled distributions (~60 samples per aquifer) based on multiple tracers: tritium, tritiogenic helium-3, sulfur hexafluoride, chlorofluorocarbons, carbon-14, radiogenic helium-4. Nationally, 38% Anthropocene (since 1953), 34% Holocene (75 – 11,800 years ago), 28% Pleistocene (>11,800 ago). fraction ranges <5 100%, indicating a wide range land-surface contamination. exceeds 50% 7 eastern aquifers are predominately confined. 5 western unconfined. these depends rates recharge release stored fine-grained layers.

Contamination and restoration of groundwater aquifers.

Humans are exposed to chemicals in contaminated groundwaters that are used as sources of drinking water. Chemicals contaminate groundwater resources as a result of waste disposal methods for toxic chemicals, overuse of agricultural chemicals, and leakage of chemicals into the subsurface from buried tanks used to hold fluid chemicals and fuels. In the process, both the solid portions of the subs...

Relative Vulnerability of Public Supply Wells to VOC Contamination in Hydrologically Distinct Regional Aquifers

A process-based methodology was used to compare the vulnerability of public supply wells tapping seven study areas in four hydrologically distinct regional aquifers to volatile organic compound (VOC) contamination. This method considers (1) contributing areas and travel times of groundwater flowpaths converging at individual supply wells, (2) the oxic and/or anoxic conditions encountered along ...

Vulnerability of Recently Recharged Groundwater in Principle Aquifers of the United States To Nitrate Contamination

Recently recharged water (defined here as <60 years old) is generally the most vulnerable part of a groundwater resource to nonpoint-source nitrate contamination. Understanding at the appropriate scale the interactions of natural and anthropogenic controlling factors that influence nitrate occurrence in recently recharged groundwater is critical to support best management and policy decisions t...
